There are a handful of really nice window star tutorials on the net, I shared a couple in my last post. Another that I forgot to mention (simply because I've used this tute so often it feels like common knowledge, kinda like making No-Bake Oatmeal cookies, recipe forthcoming, I promise) is Duo Fiberworks' Window Star Tutorial. It was the first star I ever folded, very beautiful.
One star I haven't seen a tutorial for is the five point star, so today I'll be sharing how I make a 5 point window star. If I'm unclear anywhere or you need more information, just leave a comment and I'll help as best I can :-)
materials needed:
kite paper (you can use tissue paper, but kite paper is best)
gluestick or glue
toothpick (if using glue)
a sharpknife
I'm using a 2.5 pieces of the small pack of kite paper sold at A Little Garden Flower. You can use smaller pieces, but I wanted the paper to be large enough to demonstrate the folds.
When making folds, make sure you go over the creases with the side of your knife or your fingernail, you want your creases nice and sharp.
1. Take a square of kite paper.
2. Fold it in half and cut with a very sharp knife
3. Then fold it in half again to make a square (don't cut!!)
4. Unfold it, and then bring one end to the middle fold you made. Make a nice crease
5. Cut at the crease. Don't throw away the paper you've cut off, it can be used in a different star :-)
6. Now, fold your paper in half, lengthwise.
7. Unfold.
8. See those little squares on the left? Those aren't just pretty, they're useful too!
9. Fold bottom corner in, lining up the edge with the creases in the paper. Repeat on top.
10. Now fold the right bottom corner upwards. You want the right point to be right at the middle crease, while the left side of this fold will overlap the left corner fold
Like so. This is where that pretty cross-crease comes in handy, line it up with the edge of the corner fold here.
11. Now you want to unfold the last fold you made, and bring the right bottom corner up to the crease you made in the previous step.
12.Repeat on top.
Ooooo, pointy. Sometimes the last couple folds take a little bit of adjusting to get them to lay right, don't get frustrated, that's normal.
13. I like to add a dab of glue, to hold the point closed. This is strictly preference.
14. Now do steps 2-13 four more times.
15. Now it's time to glue the points together. I recommend laying them out in pattern before gluing, so you know you've got them evenly placed. You can use a glue stick, or school glue and a toothpick (really, you only need a tiny dot of glue or you'll saturate the paper and that's not pretty).
Finished star.
Isn't it pretty? And just for fun, here are some other stars I've made :-D
